Durham Region is proposing a 20%-30% increase to their transit development charges beginning Jan. 1, 2013.
A single detached home will jump from the current rate of $401 to $515, and a low density multiple will be increased from $336 to $414. A two-bedroom apartment will change from $232 to $299, and a one-bedroom from $149 to $194.
Non-Residential developments will also be increased from $0.25/sq. ft to $0.31/sq. ft.
Gary Asselin, economic analyst for Durham Region’s finance department, said that the charges are in line with other regions of similar size.

An easy way to increase the value of your home!
Do you like the colours on the outside of your home? What I mean by that, do you like the colour of your siding or brickwork? How about those shutters? What about your garage door? Does it match the rest of your home?
The reason I ask is that we recently did a complete eavestroughing, soffits and fascia installation on a home in Port Perry, but we also made recommendations that improved the look of their home 100%, and the owners are extremely happy!
They were not pleased with all their red brick and the pink accents, so I suggested to highlight things up a bit with a “terra bronze” that would tone down the pink tones in the brick. Well, they loved it so much that they decided to have their siding and shutter repainted and re-done as well… all in terra bronze.
You can see the changes in the photos below. It really did make all the difference in the world… not only that, but the value of their home just went up!

At True North Eavestroughing we take pride in all our work and our customers’ homes, every step of the way!
After more than 20 years in the business, you think you’ve seen it all. However, I went to quote on a job last week which proved me wrong.
The client told me they were having overflow problems whenever it rained. “Water shoots right over the gutters,” he said to me. So I got up on my ladder and couldn’t believe what I found. This first photo will show you everything.
The gutters had a black 4” underground landscaping plastic pipe inserted into it. No wonder they overflowed!
He explained that his gardener had suggested he do this to prevent leaves and debris from clogging his gutters. It only cost him two hundred dollars, and he had been enduring this problem for more than 4 years! I explained to him that this type of pipe was for underground landscaping, and that this type of piping wasn’t doing any good on his roof.
So we removed all of the existing eavestroughing and installed new 5″ seamless eavestroughing throughout with 3″ x 3″ downpipes to give proper water flow. We then installed our number one leaf guard system, the Alu-Rex M-5200, and used the T-Rex fastening system. I guaranteed him that overflow problems were over!
At True North Eavestroughing, Quality is our Priority!
The re-sale real estate market in Durham Region continues to prosper. To date in 2012, prices are on average 3% higher than 2011.
Activity is very brisk and at the present time, it would be considered a Sellers’ Market, due to the relatively low volume of listings. This may change slightly in the coming months as more properties get listed in a traditionally busier time.

What goes into designing shutters? Here at Sunshade Blinds & Drapery, we are asked this common question almost on a daily basis, so we decided to put together a guide with helpful tips for designing shutters. We won’t get into mounting and installation/framing requirements, as we will cover those basics in an upcoming post for you as well. The type of shutters we are considering for this blog are Eclipse shutters however, most manufactures like Maxxmar and Hunter Douglas also use the same design options as well in case you are curious.
Let us begin with Louvers.
Louvers are also commonly known as slats, they come in 3 different sizes (seen below Fig 1.1) for you to choose from which offer different benefits and function. The louver size you select will depend not only on your personal preference but how much mounting depth is available for your windows. That being said, mounting depth can be overcome simply by adding extension frames or longer hinges to your windows. Most homes with casing windows can easily handle 3.5’’ and even 4.5’’ Louvers.
